Review: Carrboro by Dex Romweber

DJ Slaz in PA presents: Albums That Live  - Classic Albums Review

“Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.”  – Unknown

Dex Romweber’s solo outing, “Carrboro,” is a musical odyssey showcasing the singer’s versatility and deep roots in jazz, rockabilly, and surf.  Named for a town in North Carolina, the album, blending covers and originals, is a testament to Romweber’s ability to transcend musical genres while maintaining a cohesive sound.  “Carrboro,” refuses to be confined to a single style, seamlessly weaving between jazz instrumentals, garage rock anthems, and raw surf and rockabilly vibes.

Rockabilly Swagger and Alt-Country Soul

It’s in his cover of Mahalia Jackson’s “The Trouble of The World,”  where Romweber’s anguished, gravelly voice shines through a bluesy guitar riff.  It’s a contemplative piece setting the tone for the album as a whole.

My favorite track, “Where Do You Roam?” stands out with its haunting melody inviting listeners on a journey through the heart.   “Where Do You Roam?” encapsulates the spirit of the album, reflective yet energetic rockabilly soul.

Tracks like "Lonesome Train" lean even harder into the rockabilly sound, with simple yet infectious rhythms and lyrics that evoke classic Americana themes of loneliness and heartache. Other notable tracks include “I Had A Dream,” which opens the album, “Midnight at Vic’s,” conjuring up smoky jazz clubs, and finally, his take on Richard Rodgers' ballad "My Funny Valentine" a stripped-down, haunting rendition that showcases his melancholic side, and all of which highlight Romweber’s skillful instrumental work and knack for storytelling.

Zero Filler, Maximum Impact, All Heart

Romweber’s history with the Flat Duo Jets shines through and there’s no filler here; every track serves a purpose. Whether you’re sipping whiskey in a cowpunk bar, two-stepping in a honkey tonk,  or  laying back in a smoke filled jazz club, “Carrboro” fits seamlessly. It’s a timeless gem in Romweber’s impressive catalog.

Kaleidoscopic Sound

Dex Romweber’s “Carrboro” is a kaleidoscope of sound, blending Country nostalgia, Rockabilly swagger, and Americana soul. Each track is a chapter in a musical novel, and the journey is unforgettable.   Dex Romweber's "Carrboro" isn't just an album; it’s a portal to a bygone era of smoky bars and late-night revelry.  Romweber proves again that he’s a master at his craft, and this album resonates with authenticity and passion.
