Gutsy News - April 2026

Album Review, Top 5, New DJs and more!

Welcome to the Gutsy Radio newsletter! We‘ll keep it short and sweet letting you know about all the amazing music and DJs you can find on gutsyradio.org.

Gutsy Radio is a decentralized community radio station featuring music, talk, performance, and experiments broadcast live from around the United States. Each program is curated solely by its DJ, host, or performer. We present an eclectic and exciting variety of ad-free shows every night of the week and weekend mornings.

New Website!

After months of development the new gutsyradio.org is here. See the daily schedule, recently archived shows, latest news and the Gutsy shop all from the home page. It’s also easy to sign up for this very newsletter, donate, or to submit a DJ application.

Our new website has a greatly improved streaming service with better reliability and higher quality audio. We also have a list of the last 20 shows put in our archive, on-site group chat, and our own live player. With that, there may be changes to how you listen. Please visit the How to Listen page for updated details.

The iOS and Android Gutsy Radio apps have been discontinued. That said, we realize some of listeners like the convenience of having a dedicated listening icon on their phone. This can be done on iOS by following these instructions, or on Android by following these instructions. Visit our stand alone player page on your mobile phone and add it to your home screen.

Album Review

The Bestiary by Castle Rat — When I first stumbled across the cult of the rat, I was trepidatious; the cover of their first album (and this second one) was a real-life (if low-budget) re-creation of the Heavy Metal magazine covers I remember from my youth. I hated that shit, not because of the fantasy aesthetic, but in spite of it. I hated that being a D&D nerd in the 90s came with all this sexist imagery, and I didn't want to be associated with it.

But I judged unfairly in this case; after seeing Castle Rat live, I can confidently report that Riley Pinkerton (that gal on the cover) IS the RAT QUEEN. She writes the songs. She crushes the guitar. She bellows her lyrics like a  Saruman (her somehow both powerful and unforced voice has that same otherworldly quality that Ozzy had in his best Sabbath years). She sword fights rat demons on stage. I wouldn't be surprised if she smelted that armor herself, and I don't doubt that it is fully functional.

I didn't say anything about the music? Yeah, I did; it's Riley Pinkerton's barbarian queen essence conjured in sonic form. Ok fine. Two cracking albums in two years, Castle Rat is, for my money, the best stoner rock band active today. See them live.
