Bite-size Album Reviews from Emily
DJ Emily in Maryland, who hosts NOT A PHASE once a month on Mondays at 9 pm ET, shares bite-size reviews of some of her favorite 2024 releases so far. Look for more of Emily’s reviews in a future newsletter! And catch her next show on November 4.
A more conventional full-band structure does not compromise Glitterer’s cutting precision. On its third full-length, Ned Russin’s project continues to deliver short and sweet but gritty songs that ask big questions about passion and purpose.
I did not resonate with Katie Crutchfield’s self-actualized Americana on “Saint Cloud,” and when I first saw the artwork for “Tigers Blood,” I thought she was trying to jack Karly Hartzman’s swagger. A duet with MJ Lenderman? Come on! Surprisingly, I actually really liked this album. Laid-back but lyrically dense, it shows that rumination doesn’t stop with self-actualization.
Bonus (Re-Release)
Majesty Crush - “Butterflies Don’t Go Away”
Majesty Crush is unique among shoegaze bands for their sharp, visceral lyrics that tell stories of obsession. And now it’s time for more people to become obsessed with them. Numero Group gives the ill-fated 90s shoegaze band the spotlight they deserve on this reissue of their hypnotic discography.
Welcome Back!
Alex in Connecticut is back! Listen to Alex’s show, Being Nutrient, once a month on Monday nights at 11pm - 1am ET. Next show is November 4.

Top 5
This month, we present DJ Maverick’s Top 5 Unsettling Songs. Tune in twice a month on Thursdays from 11pm to 1am ET for Shuffle, a wildly eclectic show. Next show is tonight — October 10th!
🕯️ Bath by Björk. A quiet, uneasy song has the same feeling as getting cobwebs on you and you can't get them off.
🕯️ Cris D'Aveugle (Blind Man's Cry) by Diamanda Galás. This version is from her live album Plague Mass.
🕯️ Please Don’t Leave Me by Uboa. Abrasive, visceral, and cathartic. I highly recommend listening to Uboa's The Origin of My Depression for the full experience. When I first listened to it, it was very late at night and I couldn't sleep for a couple hours.
🕯️ Screaming Slave by Nine Inch Nails. It's a noisy experimental Happiness in Slavery remix. What more is there to say?
🕯️ I’M GETTING OUT WHILE I CAN by Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter. Crafted by the same mastermind behind Lingua Ignota, this uncanny song introduces Hayter's concept album SAVED!
🌀 HONORABLE MENTION: Ptolemaea by Ethel Cain. Absolutely spine-chilling, yet so amazing.
