Bite-size Album Reviews from Emily

DJ Emily from Maryland, who hosts NOT A PHASE once a month on Mondays at 9 pm ET, shares bite-size reviews of some of her favorite 2024 releases so far. Look for more of Emily’s reviews in a future newsletter! And catch her next show on September 9.

While not as immediate as the Michigan band’s 2023 viral sensation, s/t, Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot grew on me. Full of clever allusions and wordplay, it paints a vivid picture of suburban oddities and taps into teenage emotions I’m glad I still have.

Behind vocal distortion and sludgy production hide incredible, borderline anthemic melodies. “disappoint u” has been in especially heavy rotation for me, and album closer “midnight effigy in a soup can” captures the sound of a nightmare. The prolific Philly musician keeps churning out releases, and I keep eating them up.

I’m always on about how I’m sick of hearing female singers just whispering about being sad, and how I wish more women sang with full-voiced bite about emotions other than sadness. “Bite Down” delivers. It’s often sad, but it’s a full-bodied sadness, filled with a rare sense of nuance and set apart by the singer-songwriter’s grounded, well-supported vocals.

Top 5

This month, we present Top 5 Songs of 2024 (so far) from DJ Ian in New York. Tune in every other Sunday from 10am – 12pm ET for mostly new music, new old favorites and deep dives.

  1. ⚡️ Water Damage - Reel EE. Water Damage does one thing really well and they do it for a long time, Reel EE is the best version so far.

  2. ⚡️Weak Signal - Rich Junkie. I recently described Weak Signal as Yo La Tengo if they cornered you in a dark alley, and “Rich Junkie” exemplifies that vibe with the best guitar tone going.

  3. ⚡️The Spatulas - Maya. Completely singular songwriting, I get melodies and lines from this song stuck in my head constantly.

  4. ⚡️Amy O - Dribble Dribble. A perfect homemade pop song.

  5. ⚡️Jake Xerxes Fussell - Cuckoo! A melody from 1935 with lyrics from the 1800s that is one of the most beautiful songs of 2024.

Honorable Mention: MJ Lenderman - She’s Leaving You. It’s good music.
